Yanartaş Night Walk: A Guide to the Eternal Flames
Everything you need to know to discover Yanartaş — where natural gas has burned for centuries — on an evening walk.
Yanartaş (ancient Chimaera), just north of Çıralı, is a unique site where methane seeping from the mountainside ignites naturally. In antiquity it was linked to the myth of the Chimaera. The flames have burned without going out for thousands of years.
When to Go
The flames burn during the day too, but they come into their own after dark. The ideal time is about half an hour after sunset: you can see the path at dusk and watch the flames in the dark.
What the Walk Is Like
From the car park a stony 30-minute path climbs to the main flame field. The gradient is moderate — not exhausting for regular walkers, but the ground is rocky.
- A torch or head-lamp is essential — the trail is unlit.
- Wear closed shoes with grip.
- Bring water; a light layer helps for the evening cool even in summer.
- Brewing tea or toasting marshmallows over the flames is a common tradition.
Safety and Respect
The flames are real fire — keep children close. The rocks are uneven, so step carefully. The area is protected — carry your litter out and never try to put the flames out.
How to Combine It
You can fit Yanartaş into an Olympos & Yanartaş tour on the same day, or go on your own. It's a short drive from central Çıralı to the car park. Dinner at a Çıralı restaurant on the way back makes a good finish.
